Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and it arrives like the season that carries it: the bright, impatient rush of spring. Born under the ram between 21 March and 19 April, an Aries is the zodiac's beginner and its pioneer, the one who leaps before the rest of us have finished thinking. This is a complete guide to the Aries star sign: its dates and symbol, its fiery personality, its strengths and softer edges, who it loves, the houses of the chart, and the old myth written into its stars. Read it as a portrait to recognise yourself in, never a rule to live by.

The Aries Personality
Aries is cardinal fire: cardinal signs begin things, and fire signs burn with instinct and warmth, so Aries is the zodiac's starter motor. Ruled by Mars, the planet the Romans named for their god of war, an Aries moves through the world with drive, courage and a refreshing directness. They say what they mean, want what they want, and would always rather act than wait.
There is an innocence to it, too. Aries is the baby of the zodiac in the loveliest sense: enthusiastic, spontaneous and quick to forgive, meeting each new thing as if it were the first morning of the world.
Aries Strengths and Weaknesses
At their best, Aries people are brave, honest, independent and generous with their energy. They are natural leaders who will go first into the unknown, and their warmth and enthusiasm are genuinely contagious. When an Aries believes in you, you feel it.
The shadow side is simply the same fire turned up too high. Aries can be impatient, impulsive, blunt and quick to anger, racing ahead before the plan is ready and burning out before the finish line. The work of a lifetime, for the ram, is learning a little patience and the art of following through, without losing the spark that makes them so alive.
Aries in Love and Compatibility
In love, Aries is ardent, direct and a touch impatient: they fall fast and chase what they want. They tend to spark most easily with the other fire signs, Leo and Sagittarius, and with the air signs Gemini and Aquarius, whose ideas keep the flame fed. Their opposite sign, Libra, offers the balance and grace that Aries can forget, which is why opposites so often attract.
Sun-sign compatibility, though, is only the opening line of the story. Real chemistry is read from two whole charts, your moon, your rising and your Venus included. To see the full picture, map both of your birth charts and read them side by side.
Aries Sun, Moon and Rising
Most people mean their sun sign when they say they are an Aries, but the ram can sit in three very different places in a chart, and each one feels distinct.
Aries Sun
Your sun sign is your core self, your ego and the energy that drives you, and it is set by the date you were born. An Aries sun is the pioneer at the centre of the personality: bold, direct and happiest when beginning something new.
Aries Moon
Your moon sign is your inner, emotional world and what you need to feel safe. An Aries moon feels things quickly and brightly, with a temper that flares and clears like summer weather. It needs independence, honesty and room to act, and it heals by doing rather than dwelling.
Aries Rising
Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the way you meet the world, set by the exact time and place of your birth. An Aries rising comes at life head first: direct, energetic and youthful, quick to start a conversation and quicker to start a plan.
You might be a calm, considered person who is surprised to be called an Aries, simply because your moon or rising sits in a gentler sign. The only way to know your whole sky is to look: our free birth chart calculator reveals your sun, moon, rising and every planet in moments.
Aries Through the Houses
Aries does not only appear as your sun sign. Wherever the ram falls across the twelve houses of your birth chart, the areas of life, it brings its fire and courage to that corner of your world. Here is how Aries colours each one.
- First house (self): a bold, direct presence and an Aries rising who leads with courage.
- Second house (money and values): a brave, impulsive way with money and a hard-won sense of self-worth.
- Third house (mind and communication): quick, blunt, energetic thinking and a love of a good debate.
- Fourth house (home and roots): a need for independence at home, and a household run at full tilt.
- Fifth house (love and creativity): passionate romance, playful courage, and creativity in bold strokes.
- Sixth house (work and health): a sprinter at work, happiest when busy, who thrives on movement.
- Seventh house (partnership): drawn to strong, independent partners, learning to share the lead.
- Eighth house (intimacy and change): fearless with deep feeling, transformation and the things others avoid.
- Ninth house (travel and belief): an adventurer of ideas and places, forever heading somewhere new.
- Tenth house (career and reputation): an ambitious trailblazer who wants to be first in their field.
- Eleventh house (friendship and community): a natural instigator among friends, rallying the group to act.
- Twelfth house (rest and the inner world): a quieter Aries, with courage that works behind the scenes.

The Myth of the Ram
Every sign carries a story, and Aries carries one of the oldest. In Greek myth the ram was Chrysomallus, a winged, golden-fleeced creature sent by the cloud nymph Nephele to rescue her children, Phrixus and Helle, from sacrifice. As the ram flew them to safety, Helle lost her grip and fell into the strait still poetically remembered as the Hellespont, or "Helle's sea". Phrixus survived, and in gratitude sacrificed the ram and hung its golden fleece in a sacred grove, where it became the prize that Jason and the Argonauts would one day sail for.
The ram itself was honoured with a place in the night sky. As the World History Encyclopedia tells it, the creature gave its fleece to the boy "before ascending into the stars to become the constellation Aries", a story recorded by ancient writers including the Roman poet Ovid. It is a fitting origin for the zodiac's first sign: a tale of rescue, courage and a headlong leap toward the unknown.
The Aries Crystal
The stone most often matched to Aries is carnelian, a warm orange chalcedony coloured by iron that mirrors the sign's courage and drive. It is a lovely stone for beginning things, which is the one thing Aries does best of all. For the fuller picture, our guides to crystals for every zodiac sign and star sign crystals pair a stone with each sign by element and ruling planet.
Is Astrology Real?
Honestly, astrology is a language of symbols and meaning rather than a science of cause and effect. Being an Aries cannot make you brave any more than it can make you late. What a sign can do is hold up a mirror, offering words for patterns you already feel and a gentle prompt to reflect. Read your Aries traits as a story about yourself, take what rings true, and leave the rest. When you are ready to go deeper, begin with zodiac and astrology and map your own birth chart.
Frequently asked questions
Aries runs from 21 March to 19 April. The exact dates shift by a day from year to year, so if you were born right at the start or end of that window, check your birth chart to be sure of your sun sign.
Aries is bold, direct, energetic and brave, the pioneer of the zodiac. Ruled by Mars and driven by cardinal fire, an Aries loves to begin things and act on instinct. The same fire can make them impatient and impulsive when it burns too hot.
Aries tends to spark with the fellow fire signs Leo and Sagittarius, and with the air signs Gemini and Aquarius. Its opposite sign, Libra, is a classic attraction. True compatibility, though, is read from two whole birth charts, not sun signs alone.
The Aries symbol is the Ram, and its element is fire. It is a cardinal sign, ruled by the planet Mars, and the very first sign of the zodiac.
Carnelian, a warm orange chalcedony, is the classic Aries stone for courage and drive. Red jasper and bloodstone make lovely companions when the fire is burning fast.
Yes. Your star sign and your sun sign both mean the zodiac sign the Sun was passing through when you were born. You may also have your moon or rising sign in Aries, which a birth chart will reveal.
