What is a sun sign?
Your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun was in on the day you were born. It is the sign most people mean when they ask what your sign is, and it represents your core self: your essential character, your ego, and the energy that drives you. Of your big three placements, your sun is the one you can find from your birthday alone.
Sun sign, star sign or zodiac sign?
These all mean the same thing. Sun sign is the precise astrological term; star sign and zodiac sign are the everyday names. All three refer to the sign the Sun occupied at your birth. There are twelve, each tied to a roughly month long stretch of the year.

How many zodiac signs are there?
There are twelve zodiac signs in Western astrology, one for each section of the Sun's yearly path. You may have heard of a thirteenth, Ophiuchus, but it is not used in the standard twelve sign zodiac that horoscopes are based on.
Born on the cusp?
If your birthday lands on the day the Sun changes sign, you may have seen yourself called on the cusp. In astrology you are still one sign or the other; there is no blended cusp sign. Because the changeover happens at a precise moment, the calculator above uses your date to place you correctly.
