Every home gathers more than dust. After a hard week, an argument, an illness or simply months of busy life, a space can start to feel heavy, stale, a little stuck. A spiritual cleansing ritual is the old, gentle answer: a way to clear that staleness, open the windows of both house and mind, and begin again. It is one of the most grounding practices there is, and you need almost nothing to start.
This is an honest guide to cleansing your home and your own energy: the traditional methods, when to do them, the crystals that help, and a clear look at what is really happening when you do.
What is a spiritual cleansing ritual?
A spiritual cleansing, sometimes called clearing or, in Latin American tradition, a limpia, is a ritual for removing unwanted or stagnant energy from a person or place and inviting fresh, calm energy in. Across cultures it has taken many forms, smoke, sound, water, salt and prayer, but the heart of it is always the same: a deliberate act of resetting a space, and an intention to begin fresh.
When to cleanse your space
There is no wrong time, but some moments call for it more than others:
- When you move into a new home, to make it your own.
- After illness, an argument or a difficult stretch.
- At the turn of a season, or alongside a spring clean.
- On the full moon or as the moon wanes, traditionally the time for releasing and clearing. The waning gibbous onward is a natural window.
How to cleanse your home
Begin by opening the windows, because stale air leaving is half the ritual. Then choose a method, or weave a few together:
- Smoke. Burning dried herbs and letting the smoke drift into the corners is the best known method. Garden sage, rosemary, cedar or bay are lovely, sustainable choices. (A note below on white sage.)
- Sound. A bell, a singing bowl, or simply clapping into the corners breaks up still, heavy air. Sound reaches where smoke does not.
- Salt. A small bowl of salt in a room, or a pinch in your cleaning water, is a traditional absorber of unwanted energy.
- An intention walk. Move slowly through each room with a clear wish, opening to light and calm. The words matter less than the meaning behind them.
The egg cleanse
One of the most loved personal cleansings is the egg cleanse, or limpia con huevo, a folk practice from Mexican and wider Latin American tradition. A whole, raw egg is passed over the body from head to toe, with the intention of drawing off heavy energy, then cracked into a glass of water and read for what it shows. It is a beautiful, tactile ritual, and like all of this it is best treated as a practice of intention rather than a medical or magical cure.
Cleansing your own energy
You can cleanse yourself as gently as you cleanse a room:
- A salt bath or shower. Add a handful of sea salt or Epsom salt to a bath, or in the shower picture the water carrying the day away down the drain.
- Breath. A few slow breaths with a long exhale is the simplest reset of all.
- Crystals. Hold a stone you find calming, or place one nearby. More on these below.
Crystals for cleansing
A few stones are traditionally tied to clearing and protection. Selenite, named for the moon, is the classic cleansing crystal, said to clear a space and even other stones. Black tourmaline is the traditional stone of protection and grounding. And if you are cleansing your crystals themselves rather than your home, our guide on how to cleanse your crystals covers the simple ways.
Does spiritual cleansing actually work?
Honestly, there is no scientific evidence of a literal energy being lifted from a room, and any sense of a space feeling lighter can be explained more simply. But that does not make it pointless, quite the opposite. The act itself does real work: opening windows genuinely freshens a room, tidying and clearing as you go lifts the mood, and performing a deliberate ritual has been shown to reduce anxiety and restore a sense of control. A cleansing ritual draws a line between before and after, and that fresh start is felt whether or not any energy ever moved.
I cleanse my home at the full moon, not because I think the smoke carries my worries out the window, but because the ritual makes me stop, open up the house, and decide that the heaviness of the past weeks can stay behind. Every time, the rooms and I both feel lighter.
A gentle, honest note
Two small cautions. Always cleanse with smoke safely: keep a window open, use a fireproof dish, and never leave anything burning unattended. And please choose your herbs kindly. White sage and palo santo have been over harvested and are sacred to specific Indigenous cultures, so common garden sage, rosemary or cedar are gentler on the earth and just as effective. Cleansing is about care, for your home, yourself and the world it sits in.
Keep going
Pair a cleansing with a new moon ritual to clear and then plant, gather with others at a moon circle, or wind down your day with a simple evening ritual to reset.

Open the windows, then choose a method: drift herb smoke into the corners, use sound like a bell or a clap, place salt, or walk slowly through each room with a clear intention. Many people combine a few.

White sage and palo santo are over harvested and sacred to specific Indigenous cultures. Common garden sage, rosemary or cedar are kinder choices and work just as well. Always burn safely with a window open.
There is no evidence of literal energy moving, but the ritual does real good: fresh air and tidying lift a room, and a deliberate ritual eases anxiety and marks a fresh start. The value is in the reset.
