Birthday Crystals: Find Your Birth Stone by Month

Birthday crystals: a central crystal ringed by twelve small birthstones, one for each month, under a crescent moon.

Before zodiac crystals were a thing, there were birthstones: one gem tied to the month you were born, and a tidy place to start a collection without overthinking it. The tradition is older and richer than the jewellery counter it now lives on. Here is the stone for every month, and why your birthday crystal and your zodiac crystal are not the same thing.

What are birthday crystals?

Birthday crystals, or birthstones, are gems assigned to each calendar month. The modern list most jewellers work from was standardised in 1912 by the American National Retail Jewelers' Association, tidied up from much older traditions that reach back to antiquity. Your birthstone is simply the gem for your birth month. That is the whole rule.

Birthstones by month

  • January: Garnet, a deep red stone of endurance and devotion.
  • February: Amethyst, the purple quartz of calm and clarity.
  • March: Aquamarine, a pale blue beryl for serenity and courage.
  • April: Diamond, for brilliance, strength and clarity.
  • May: Emerald, the green beryl of love and renewal.
  • June: Pearl or moonstone, for intuition and gentle grace.
  • July: Ruby, the red stone of passion and vitality.
  • August: Peridot, a green stone of warmth and good fortune.
  • September: Sapphire, the blue stone of wisdom and truth.
  • October: Opal or tourmaline, for creativity and play.
  • November: Topaz or citrine, for warmth, confidence and abundance.
  • December: Turquoise or tanzanite, the traveller's stone of protection.

Some months come with more than one accepted birthstone, which is a choice, not a problem. For the full birthstone tradition, the American Gem Society is a lovely reference.

Birthday crystals vs zodiac crystals

This is where everyone ties themselves in knots, so let us untangle it. A birthstone is assigned by calendar month; a zodiac crystal is matched to your star sign, its element and ruling planet. Because each zodiac sign straddles two calendar months, your birthstone and your zodiac crystal are often different stones, and that is perfectly fine. Not sure which sign you are? Our free birth chart calculator will sort it in about thirty seconds. Plenty of people keep both: the birthstone for sentiment, the zodiac crystal for intention. For a single signature stone by sign, see our star sign crystals guide.

How to use your birthday crystal

Same as any crystal. Cleanse it when it is new, hold it and set an intention, then wear it or carry it. A birthstone tends to pick up extra meaning simply because it is personal: a gift from a parent, or a piece worn for years. That makes it a beautiful anchor whatever you believe about its energy.

Do birthstones have any power?

Honestly? The meanings are traditional and symbolic rather than proven, and no birthstone is quietly beaming luck or protection at you. But choosing and wearing a stone tied to your own birth is a genuinely lovely ritual, and belief and ritual really do help us feel grounded. As research on honest, open label placebos shows, that benefit is real even when you know exactly how it works. So wear your birthstone for the meaning and the beauty, and enjoy it with clear eyes.

I was given a small garnet for a birthday years ago. I have no idea whether it does anything, and I have made my peace with not caring. I wear it because someone who loved me chose it for my month, and that is its own kind of magic.

Frequently asked questions

Your birthday crystal, or birthstone, is the gem for your birth month: garnet for January, amethyst for February, aquamarine for March, diamond for April, and so on through the year.

A birthstone is assigned by calendar month, while a zodiac crystal is matched to your star sign. Because each sign spans two months, the two are often different stones. You can happily keep both.

January garnet, February amethyst, March aquamarine, April diamond, May emerald, June pearl or moonstone, July ruby, August peridot, September sapphire, October opal or tourmaline, November topaz or citrine, December turquoise or tanzanite.

Yes. Several months have more than one accepted birthstone, such as June (pearl or moonstone) and December (turquoise or tanzanite), which simply gives you a choice.

The meanings are traditional and symbolic rather than proven. A birthstone does not emit luck, but wearing a stone tied to your birth is a lovely, grounding ritual, and belief and ritual genuinely help us feel settled.
