What is a personal year tarot card?
Your personal year card is a card from the Major Arcana that colours a single year of your life. Unlike your lifelong tarot birth card, which never changes, your year card turns over each year, offering a theme, a lesson and a companion for the twelve months ahead. It is a lovely thing to sit with at a birthday or the turn of the year.
How the year card is calculated
Add the day and month of your birth to the current year, then reduce the total to a number of 22 or below by adding its digits. That number is your Major Arcana card for the year (22 returns to The Fool). Because the year changes, so does the card, which is what makes it a yearly ritual. For the meaning of every card, see our Major Arcana guide, and to plan the months ahead try a year ahead tarot spread.
A gentle note
A year card is symbolism, not a forecast. It cannot decide your year, but it can offer a single, rich theme to reflect on and return to. Take what resonates and leave the rest.
Personal year card FAQ
How do I calculate my personal year tarot card?
Add the day and month of your birth to the current year, then add the digits of that total until you reach 22 or below. That is your Major Arcana card for the year. This tool does the maths for you.
Is the year card the same as my birth card?
No. Your birth card is lifelong and comes from your full birth date. Your year card changes every year, because it uses the current year in the sum.
When does the year card change?
Traditionally it turns over around your birthday, though many people simply read it for the calendar year. Either way it gives you a fresh card and a fresh theme each year.
Is a personal year card real?
It is symbolism rather than science. It cannot predict your year, but many people find it a meaningful theme to reflect on, a single archetype to carry through the months.
