What is name numerology?

Name numerology reads the letters of your name as numbers. Each letter is given a value, the values are added and reduced to a single digit or a master number, and the result is said to describe your natural talents and the way you move through the world. From your full birth name it draws three numbers: your Expression or Destiny number from every letter, your Soul Urge from the vowels, and your Personality number from the consonants.

Pythagorean and Chaldean

There are two main systems. The Pythagorean, the most common, maps the letters A to Z to the numbers 1 to 9 in order. The older Chaldean system, rooted in ancient Babylon, assigns values by the sound and vibration of each letter and uses only 1 to 8. You can switch between them above. Pythagorean is the usual starting point.

The three name numbers

  • Expression or Destiny. From all the letters of your name, said to show your natural gifts and the path you express in the world.
  • Soul Urge or Heart's Desire. From the vowels, said to reveal your inner motivation and what your heart most longs for.
  • Personality. From the consonants, said to describe the first impression others form of you.

The letter values

Each system gives every letter a number. Here are both charts, so you can work yours out by hand or simply check the calculator.

Chaldean

In the Chaldean system the number 9 is held as sacred and is not assigned to any letter, though it can still appear in a final total.

A gentle note

Numerology is a reflective tradition, not a science, and no number can fix who you are or what will happen. Read your numbers as a mirror and a prompt, a way to notice patterns and ask better questions of yourself, and take what is useful while leaving the rest. The meaning is in the reflection, not in the maths.

Numerology FAQ

How is name numerology calculated?

Each letter of your full birth name is given a number, the numbers are added, and the total is reduced to a single digit or a master number. The vowels give your Soul Urge, the consonants your Personality, and all the letters together your Expression number.

What is the difference between Pythagorean and Chaldean numerology?

Pythagorean numerology maps A to Z to 1 to 9 in order and is the most widely used. Chaldean, the older system, assigns numbers by sound and uses only 1 to 8. They can give different results, so try both.

Which name should I use?

Traditionally your full name as given at birth is used for the core numbers, as it is said to hold your original blueprint. You can also try a current or chosen name to see how it reads.

Is Y a vowel in numerology?

This calculator treats A, E, I, O and U as vowels and every other letter, including Y, as a consonant, which is the simplest common approach.
