What is a life path number?

Your life path number is the most important number in numerology. It is drawn from your date of birth and is said to describe the core theme of your life: your strengths, your lessons and the road that feels most like your own. Where your name can change, your birth date does not, so the life path is read as your steady, lifelong signature.

How to calculate your life path number

You reduce each part of your birth date to a single digit, then add them together and reduce once more. Take 18 July 1991. The month, 7, is already single. The day, 18, becomes 1 plus 8, which is 9. The year, 1991, becomes 1 plus 9 plus 9 plus 1, which is 20, then 2 plus 0, which is 2. Add the three, 7 plus 9 plus 2, to get 18, then 1 plus 8, which is 9. The life path is 9. The calculator above does this for you, and shows the working.

Master numbers

If a step adds up to 11, 22 or 33, numerology pauses there rather than reducing further. These are the master numbers, traditionally seen as carrying a heightened, more demanding version of their reduced root: 11 of the 2, 22 of the 4 and 33 of the 6.

Life path number meanings

Each life path carries its own theme. Here is what every number is traditionally said to mean.

A gentle note

Numerology is a reflective tradition, not a science, and no number can fix who you are or what will happen. Read your numbers as a mirror and a prompt, a way to notice patterns and ask better questions of yourself, and take what is useful while leaving the rest. The meaning is in the reflection, not in the maths.

Numerology FAQ

How do I calculate my life path number?

Reduce your birth month, day and year each to a single digit, add the three results together, then reduce once more to a single digit or a master number. The calculator above shows the working for your own date.

What is the best life path number?

There is no best or worst number. Each life path carries its own gifts and its own lessons, and numerology reads them as equally meaningful, simply different ways of moving through life.

What are master numbers?

If a step in the calculation lands on 11, 22 or 33, it is left as it is rather than reduced. These master numbers are traditionally seen as more intense versions of the 2, 4 and 6.

Does my life path number ever change?

No. It comes from your date of birth, which never changes, so your life path stays with you for life. Other numbers, drawn from your name, can shift if your name does.
